As an actor and model, I get to sit around a lot. Sometimes I watch Jersey Shore, and sometimes I teach myself useful skills like video and sound editing. I love the process, and I love using music to heighten the emotion (or lack thereof) in any footage.
I am on a Mac OSX (Snow Leopard), Pro Tools LE 7.4.2, Final Cut Pro 5.1.4, iMovie 8 and 6. I also have more music than the Sony vault, and know where to look for more.
Need a reel? I give you good price. Make me emails, we make talk.
I shot and edited this footage from a modeling job for Arrojo/Wella in Berlin. My first unintentional film . Mostly used iMovie, some Final Cut Pro. Too chicken to go full pro. http://vimeo.com/7656925
Nick Arrojo liked the Berlin movie. He challenged me to edit more for his company. This is mostly Final Cut Pro with music edited in Pro Tools. I did not shoot this footage, just edited. http://vimeo.com/9146807
Pokemon Reel. An actor reel would be shorter, but 4 seasons on a show can put you overboard. http://vimeo.com/8766665
Bullet Witch Reel. Clips from video game. http://vimeo.com/8681992
Arrojo/Wella Runway personal edit. Repositioned original music, edited full show down to showcase, well, me.
Sheila Frank Runway personal edit. Set music, edited full show down to showcase, well, me.
A film shot and edited by Kevin Foong _ Bayard Studios. Yeah, me again. I kept some of the original sound design, and (with the wonderful Kevin's permission) added music (Mahler's 5th), my voice, ocean fx, Russian dialogue (funny if you understand it!), helicopters, ambulance, war fx, German man, and some various ambience tracks. Pro Tools. I like noises.

Geek Like Me - Sarah Natochenny
By, Eliza Skinner (http://www.elizaskinner.net)
Im starting a new series called Geek Like Me - profiling the geeks, nerds, and dweebs that you should know about, but probably dont. Up first, Sarah Natochenny!
My pal Sarah is a model - which is ridiculous enough on its own. But she is also an anime voice actor, and plays the voice of Ash Ketchum on Pokemon.
Weird, right? She spends her days yelping like a little boy and her nights slouching on runways. (Or so I imagine. )
Ive known Sarah for years, and she lives up to all the nerd standards - shes super smart, bilingual, awkward, and trippingly verbose. Plus, shes been on panels at Comic Con! Right now shes in an online modelling competition at V Magazine, so I thought itd be a good time to ask her some questions about her impressively weird careers.
Ok, so which came first, the modelling or the cartoon work?
Im a dangerously backward person. I also get randomly lucky. The rundown, started age 12: Lee Strasberg Youth Program, get an agent, random acting/improv, somehow land the lead voice on Pokemon, get cocky, grow an inch, refuse a college education, start modeling. Im surprised I havent received any pension yet.
How do you prepare for your different jobs?
Modeling is less preparation and more lifestyle. Diet and exercise works for some girls, while others are genetic mutants who can eat pizza every day and still weight 100lbs. The day before a shoot involves green face masks and lots of tea. For Pokemon, sorry to say, I dont really prepare. My director just briefs me on whats happening in that days episode, I do a few awkward squeals to loosen up the voice, and its off to the races.
How are the audiences for your work different? Do you see any crossover, or worry about it?
You will probably notice I dont model under my legal name. I use my lifelong Russian nickname. I worry a lot about crossover. My Pokemon audience is mostly very young. They can also be very vocal (there has been a lot of Sarah-hating over the last few years; one can enjoy some colorful comments at www.myspace.com/sarahisashketchum). I have never shot anything actually exposing anything, but with the implied nudes, I do worry. To generalize, fashion people laugh when I tell them Im Ash, really because its just THAT random. Anime fansanime is a fantasy house with no windows that is easy to get sucked in toI think most fans are too young to understand that type of expression. Im not a smiling beauty queen, editorial girls never are. Models are usually atypical, and in a world when Britney Spears is/was considered beautiful, I wont even make an attempt to rock THAT mainstream boat.
What are you most proud of so far?
Being able to pay my rent in a non-rathole apartment by Union Square from a young age by doing what I love. I mean, immodestly. This interview is totally biased towards my successes, Eliza. Im also adept in failure.
Believe me - I know, Sarah, Ive seen you freestyle. But my interview style is puff? What are you working on now?
Modeling is a very short lived career. Right now, my main focus is definitely on that, and so far, its been quite good to me. I dont have supermodel aspirations a lot of girls dont realise that models are not credited in most magazinesUnfortunately, my talent for it lies in editorial workwhich hardly pays! Catalogs, now THATS money! I was a member of the NYC based improv group Reality TV Live! for a year, and have now joined a wonderful musical improv group. Im using my rhythmic gymnastics background for an improv comedy video today, actuallyit will be on my facebook soon! Voiceovers are awesome, and I plan to continue doing it. My consistent goal in life, however, especially after modeling, is to be a working actor in theater, film and TV. And of course, my talent for it lies in indie filmwhich hardly pays. I should probably develop some movie-star aspirations I hear they get credited in movies.
Interview with Pokebeach (2006)
http://pokebeach.com
1. When did you first hear about Ash needing a new voice actor?
My manager sent me on the audition around April of 2006.
2. How many people showed up to audition for the voice?
Actors get appointments so there was no American Idol line for it, but when I asked out of curiosity, they said a LOT. They probably called all the NY agencies for submissions and went through their own files of actors they personally know. So yeah. A lot.
3. Once you got the part, how did you react? How did others in your family or your friends act?
I was shocked. Completely. I remember walking out of the 1st audition, calling my mom, and telling her how awful my audition was. I was shocked to even get a callback. My family was proud, my friends lovingly laughed at me. Or maybe not so lovingly.
4. Have you ever met Veronica Taylor or any of the other original VAs?
Nope.
5. What is a typical day for you go like? Do you drive to work? Talk to other VAs? Get Starbucks? Leave and go to McDonalds? :p
I don't eat McDonalds. Sorry! I live in Manhattan, and actually got behind a wheel for the first time only a few days ago...which is probably illegal...I only drove like 3 feet in an empty parking lot. I walk to the studio, or if it's freezing I'll take a cab. I live too close to it to make any sense out of taking the subway there, but that's generally how I get around. I'm usually the only actor in the studio, sometimes we overlap, but I rarely see other actors, because we all record separately. We order food at the studio, I usually have a salad or fruit with yogurt. Sometimes there's a chocolate cake hanging out somewhere in the studio and I eat that too :). On a day that I'm not recording, I'm a regular actor. Auditions, some work, German and French classes, improv practice, and just hanging out with friends, with my cat...regular stuff!
6. How long do you usually spend working as Ash everyday? Does it ever get tiring or over-exciting?
Well I don't work every day. I usually schedule it as one long day. It sometimes gets tiring, because I'm naturally a pretty low-energy person, but they take good care of me!
7. How do you prepare for an episode? Do they show you the script in advance? Do you practice it? Or do they just give you the script when you walk in?
The script never leaves the studio. There's a synopsis that I read, and then go right into it. I read the script as we go so my reads are correct.
8. How hard is it to match the lip flap?
At first it was quite difficult, but now I usually get it on the 1st take.
9. Has Ash's voice changed your own voice in any way?
Not at all.
10. Did you enjoy dubbing the Manaphy movie? How long did it take to do?
I loved it. The movie is sooo beautiful. It took me about 6 hours to do. It comes out April 3rd!!
11. Have you started dubbing the Diamond and Pearl season in Sinnoh? Do you know any Diamond and Pearl English names, besides Mantyke, Manaphy, Buizel, or Chatot?
I just dubbed the 1st two episodes...and you ain't gettin any names outta me! (WPM Note: the first two episodes of the Sinnoh region are the last two episodes of the current season. The actual D/P season does not start until summer.)
12. How close are you to the other VAs on the show?
We're all friends, but we don't see each other as much as we should! Parties are always a blast with these people.
13. Have you read any criticism about the new VAs? How does it affect you?
Sometimes I read the boards but I don't post on them. I get a lot of fan/not so much a fan mail. Some I agree with, some I don't, some makes me work at the voice harder, some the read harder etc. Overall it's helped.
14. Has working with Pokemon opened any doors as far as future voice acting work goes?
People think it's cool. Even people who are in straight acting take notice. Mainly it's just random and unexpected for a young actress to say "yep and I also do Ash on Pokemon."
15. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about what you have seen behind the scenes of making Pokemon episodes?
I honestly can't think of anything because the work isn't very integrated...we have a lot of laughs!
Thank you!

Sarah Natochenny
Sarah is an actress/model who did a bit part in a music video I directed recently. Id never met her before that. She was totally cool and down-to-earth (rare for an actress/model, you know?). So happens shes one of the most talented voice over artists Ive ever met. Shes the voice of Pokemons Ash with three animated motion pictures under her belt, is multilingual, and by the sound of it can do just about any accent. Check out this blog dedicated to her audio work.
Interview with Pokezam
(http://www.pokezam.com)
Sarah Natochenny is a formally trained Improvisational, and theatre actress....
...Sarah has stated that her favorite Pokemon are Mew and Pikachu. Sarah is quoted as, "I was about 9 when Pokemon first came out and I loved it, I never thought I would be doing the voice of one of the characters!"
Exclusive Interview:
In December 2006 PokeZam was able to get an exlusive interview with Ash's new voice actor, Sarah Natochenny. It truly was an honour to be able to speak to such a kind lady. If I ever get the chance to meet her in person I will because she was so nice and down to earth. I've emailed many famous people before and she was the first to respond, so serious props go out to her; thanks! Below is the interview I conducted by email with the one and only, Ash's voice:
There are so many questions I would like to ask you, but I'll start with a few because I know how busy you must be with your job as Ash and school (if you still go). I'm not sure how many times you've been interviewed before, but I've tried to come up with some unique questions for you.
Sorry it took so long to get back to you, I'm in the middle of finals and moving and work, but here are my answers to all of your questions, and thank you for doing this!
1. When you went to audition for Ash were you told to try to sound like Veronica Taylor or did you just come up with your own voice for the character?
When I auditioned for the role, the main objective was to sound like Taylor. They auditioned many people for Ash, looking for the one who could replicate the voice. In the end it was a close call between me and one other girl...
2. How long does it take you to record the voice of Ash for one episode? How long do you usually spend in the studio during each session?
On average, each episode takes me about 2-3 hours to record. I usually work for about 3-5 hours at a time.
3. In terms of voice acting how did you get into it and who have you been your biggest inspirations?
I got into voice acting via "regular" acting, my manager just happened to send me on this audition because he thought I sounded right for it. As far as inspirations go, I find them everywhere. For a name actor, I'd say Robin Williams...his voices are phenomenal. There are many actors here in NY who I know, but aren't huge names that are fantastic. I also get really inspired when I hear a person with an awesome speaking voice and imitate them. I love to imitate voices, but you will never see me in Vegas dressed like Cher. That is a promise.
4. How similar are you in real life to the character, Ash?
I guess we're both really driven to succeed. I am also very competitive by nature and need to be the best at something before I quit. I did rhythmic gymnastics through-out the course of my childhood, and even though I wanted to, didn't quit until I got a medal at the Junior Olympics. We both also say "huh?" a lot.
5. I read somewhere that you used to watch Pokemon before you voiced Ash; were you just aware of it or did you like watch it everyday? Were you a big fan?
I remember when the craze first started, all my friends got Pokemon cards, and I didn't. My friend Marina bought me a pack for my birthday, and I even got a little binder and plastic cases for them. I was a pretty big fan of the show as a kid and watched it regularly, but I didn't dress up as Pikachu for Halloween
though...
6. Do you ever visit any fan-made Pokemon websites for fun? Can you name a few that you've heard of?
I usually stay away from the message boards though I read them occasionally to see the response. I don't regularly visit any fan-sites...I don't spend much time online really.
Well those are all the questions I have for you for now. Please respond whenever you're not busy. Thank you for your time. Have a nice day.
Thanks so much again for doing this! Take care and happy holidays!
